Double dose.
Double dose.

Totally agree! Peeta just didn’t do it for me. I think he had good moments like the interview, and some of the cave scenes but overall, it was just not there.
I was always hesitant about his casting only because he wasn’t what I imagined (and he’s short) and hoped that his acting would pull it off… that didn’t happen though.
What’s worse is that unlike in the books where I am rotting for Peeta despite Katniss’s hesitancy for romance, in the movie I felt like I was cheering for Gale. The few looks he has with Katniss are a million times more powerful then the many whole scenes she has with Peeta.
I have to admit that while I like the way most of the movie was shot, I really had a hard time at the beginning with the jerky handheld camera. Now I’m going to get a bit geeky on you bear with me: I saw the need for it in the Arena but it baffled me why that style was chosen for the beginning at District 12.
I loved the hallucination scenes, I loved the flashbacks, loved the way the commentary and the reporting from the Arena were shot. Overall, very cool. But I also wanted more from the other districts. When the rebellion struck at District 11, the reaction and response from the people, I was teary eyed. That’s the most powerful scene in the whole movie.
I even liked Gale. More then I did in the book.
Jennifer Lawrence was indeed brilliant in this movie. It’s the first movie I’ve seen her in (where she’s such a lead - XMen doesn’t count) and I have to admit, I adore her. Loved how brave and stoic yet hesitant she was at the Reaping. Loved how awkward and shy she was at the Capitol. Loved how afraid she was with Cinna before going in the tube. Most of all, loved how much emotion she conveyed at the fire scene and subsequent burned-leg-scene.
I’ll watch this movie again just for her. And only for her.
I am curious though if and how the relationships will improve in the next movie. But it will all be worth it to watch Jennifer on the screen again.
OKAY. So, here are my (somewhat spoiler-y) thoughts on The Hunger Games:
1. I was right. Josh was miscast as Peeta. I guess I just don’t really understand what the director and Suzanne Collins saw in his audition—all that “charm” they kept referencing? Man. Not really present in the film. It also was so unfair of them to throw him up against Gale the Stud (who, oh my God, well done Miley Cyrus). Gale just looked so pretty and heartbroken in every scene. All of Peeta’s witty dialogue was gone, which just made him seem like the kid brother Katniss wanted to protect (especially when you compare the way she was treating him and the way she was treating Rue). That’s definitely my biggest gripe.
2. Haymitch is so completely different than in the books. He cleans up WAY too fast, and isn’t nearly as manipulative and grouchy as he is in the books. My friend Catherine and I were talking about it in the cab on the way home, and she made the very good point that part of what’s so important about his character is that he shows that when you “win” the games, it’s really no victory, and you’re essentially scarred for life. For whatever reason this one didn’t bother me quite as much—I think because his character made sense in the context of the story the movie was telling, and we still got some of his attitude when he sent the supplies to Katniss.
3. I LOVED seeing the behind-the-scenes of the Gamemakers BUT I was really hoping for more reaction shots from the different districts. Seneca’s last scene is excellent.
4. Rue. So perfect.
5. Jennifer Lawrence was amazing. The fire scene, when the Gamemakers are trying to turn her back towards the careers is SO INTENSE. Everything, from the reaping scene (probably my favorite in the whole movie) to acting out the incredibly painful burn on her leg to her reaction after Rue’s death. Girl, please be my best friend.
7. I have to say, though, I kept turning to Catherine and laughing at the beginning of the movie when Katniss tells Prim a good ten times there’s no way she’s going to get picked, and that the mockingjay pin was going to protect her (even more hilarious when Prim gives it to Katniss later and is like, “it’ll protect you now!” Because it worked so well the first time???)—it was like every single person she was like, “Oh, you’ll be TOTES fine” ended up dead.
8. EFFIE. “That is MAHOGANY!”
8. Now that I’m thinking about this a little more, another small gripe I have is that it seemed like they were only in the arena for two days. The pacing of it was off. You got a sense of how many days passed by shots of Katniss sleeping, but weren’t they in the arena for pretty close to a month? They referenced that a good portion of them would die from “natural causes” like dehydration and hunger, but Foxface was the only one you got a sense of that with. Katniss was rightfully scared but she didn’t suffer from dehydration or hunger like she does in the books, which made her peril that much more immediate and real as you were reading. Maybe the issue here is just that you didn’t get enough of a sense that the Gamemakers were screwing around with all of the tributes’ heads?
8. Finale—so lackluster and rushed, I have to say. Peeta didn’t even say, “It was all for the Games, wasn’t it?” which REALLY surprised me since Real/Not Real underscores their entire relationship. Also, Peeta doesn’t lose his leg which, you know, should make me happy? But somehow doesn’t?
Lainey has a great review and I agree with most of her points, but overall, I did like it quite a bit. It wasn’t everything I hoped it would be (Peeta. sigh.) but it was a pretty faithful adaptation of the book.

I just don’t even know where to begin. Hm. Mixed feelings bro.
To stand out
Above the crowd
Even if I gotta shout out loud
‘Til mine is the only face you see
Gonna stand out ‘til you notice me
